Well the evil Republicans are at it again… They are opposing a push by senate Democrats to extend unemployment benefits for the 4th time in an effort to help people who still can’t find jobs. The bill would make it so people can receive unemployment for 99 weeks, nearly 2 years. I repeat, they want people to be able to get unemployment for almost TWO FUCKING YEARS!
Now I’m all for helping people out, and God knows this has been a shitty time for everyone lately with the economy, but allowing people to get unemployment for 99 weeks is outrageous. At that point, the guys that dress up on the side of the road with the “cash for gold” signs are more productive than you are.
Many of us wouldn’t go on unemployment unless there was no other way to feed our kids or keep a roof over our house, and even then, it would be difficult. There is nothing “evil” or bad about getting unemployment benefits because everyone pays into the system and people should be able to get something out of it. But there should be a limit to it and it is being abused, both by the people who don’t get a job when they can, and by the lawmakers who are using it as leverage to stay in office.
The shitty thing about it is that for some people, if they have an option of staying home and getting x amount of dollars, or working for the same amount in a job they don’t like, why not stay home? Before someone comments that they have been looking for a job for 2 years and can’t find one… try harder.
This is a method of making people dependent on government. Check this quote from the current White House economic adviser, Lawrence H. Summers.
“The second way government assistance programs contribute to long-term unemployment is by providing an incentive, and the means, not to work. Each unemployed person has a ‘reservation wage’—the minimum wage he or she insists on getting before accepting a job. Unemployment insurance and other social assistance programs increase [the] reservation wage, causing an unemployed person to remain unemployed longer.”
For those of you that have no attention span, I bolded the important shit. This is from the current DEMOCRAT White House economic advisor. They know that doing this “contributes to long term unemployment,” and they are doing it anyway.
November seems so close, yet so far away.
