I never really played football. Well, I did, but I would never consider riding the bench as playing. A head coach of mine in high school referred to the backup squads, otherwise known as the kids that don’t play, as the iceberg. The iceberg reference was a statement of how the top of the iceberg is what we see but it’s the bottom, the support, that makes an iceberg strong.
Coaches love spitting out their intelligence on a daily basis, which brings me to my next point. Most coaches are idiots.
Over the past week, head coach of Texas Tech football Mike Leach, was suspended due to the treatment of a player. The player involved was Adam James, son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James. James, while unable to practice due to a concussion, was forced to stand in a small dark room, for hours while the team practiced… TWICE. I remember my mom always telling me whenever I had a concussion I should always stand in a dark room by myself.
This is the truth about coaches, some are great people that help develop great people in sports, and other coaches just know the sport. What I can’t stand is that the college programs are so obsessed with winning so they can bring in money for the school, that the character of a coach seems to come in second place.
Earlier this month, head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks, Mark Mangino, AKA the fat fuck on the right, was let go due to derogatory comments made to players. If you have ever seen the man, he really has no right saying anything detrimental to or about anyone.
Hopefully, this could lead to some changes in how coaches treat players, and maybe also end any talk of how us not playing and sitting on the bench are part of an iceberg.
